Nelson the Torrential

Jase fishes from the pier. This photo is taken from the caravan's kitchen.

It seemed like a good idea to go fishing. A bit cloudy, the threat of rain loomed, but damn it, I wanted to catch a fish in this gorgeous place! So we hit the beach with soft plastic lures, small hooks, and advice from the locals on where to fish (the estuary river next to the beach). We cast a line and start to fish....

Then the rains hit. 100mm of water in 12 hours or so. We perservered in the rain for an hour or so then scurried back to the car, laughing and drenched, and drove back to camp. Campers in canvas tents huddled and cuddled, grumbled and drank beer.

Our lovely caravan park owner offered a vacant cabin to some campers, and for others, well, the excess of beer drinking at the local pub helped ease any discomfort.

Clinton's bed was washed out, so we offered a piece of floor in the caravan which he eagerly accepted.
At about 5pm the 5 of us thought it would be a good idea to empty our pockets into the local pub and we were all delighted to learn Thursday is "Schnitzel Night" - $12 with full salad bar and your choice of toppings. So.... 5 schnitzels later (with toppings such as Aussie, Prairie, Satay and Hawaiian), a lot of beer and wine.... and we almost forgot the rain until we noticed it drip from the ceiling of the pub, down the walls, into the kitchen...

Back at camp, tiny frogs with very sticky feet invaded the toilet block and could be seen leaping onto any wet surface; doors and walls; and us!

In the morning a fellow camper pulled his boat out from under the water after it had been rained on to a point of sinking. After an hour's coaxing, the engine finally roared to life, much to the cheering of everyone who heard.
(PS Didn't like the abalone after all, found it little strange with a distasteful lingering aroma and afterbite)

AND A SPECIAL "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" MESSAGE GOES OUT TO CHRISTOPHER!!

WE HOPE YOU HAVE A VERY 'BUZZY' BIRTHDAY LITTLE DUDE!!!!

Somewhere years ago I heard something about cooking abalone - that apparently it needs a lot of preparation, hours and hours of soaking time, and stuff like that, or it ends up like strange rubber. Sort of turned me off even trying it. Maybe like calamari - only some people can cook it correctly. Enjoying the reports of the journey - dear little wrens, sunken boat, amazing tree bending over the river, elegant emu, fishing feet, soggy Jase, dripping pub - love it all
    love Mum
