Jackass

It felt a little strange leaving Port Fairy, like our holiday was over and the Adventure was beginning. A hot windy day ensued, 38 degrees or more, and the car battled against a headwind as it carried the caravan through roads weaving through grassy pastures.
At 12.30 we picked a truck stop to have some lunch. The flies!!!! We set up the barbeque on the side of the van, to discover the damn thing had a whole in its copper pipe and lit up like a campfire! (it's going into the bin as soon as we find one...)
Later, we arrived at Jackass Camp Spot, a small area of cleared land off a 9km dirt road from the A1 highway. There was no sound except the trill of local birds. The level of isolation was felt immediately, and we were instantly taken by the tall gums and bushy scrub surrounding us. With no running water, no power, no phone reception and no people, this was a stark contrast to Port Fairy.
We went for a short walk, following a sign that promised us the “Jackass Viewing Ramp”. Assuming we would be able to view a river or even a waterfall, we followed the track to the ramp, only to discover the ramp lead to nowhere, just 2m or so off the ground, to look at the surrounding trees and scrub.
CRIKEY this ramp leads nowhere!
As night fell, we noticed tiny bats flying in the treetops, and numbered in their hundreds!
Next stop... Pritchards, within the Lower Glenelg National Park.
