We packed the car with a picnic, consisting of salads, salami, cheeses and pickles, and a couple of bottles of lovely South Australian late season Riesling, and ventured the enjoyable drive to Palm Valley, in the West Macdonnell Ranges NT.
The drive is completely brilliant; the unsealed sections are in pretty good condition, and you’ll even spot brumbies and cattle along the way.
The latter part of the road is an extremely rocky 4WD track and quite an adventure; and includes a number of river crossings, sand, and bedrock. Terrific fun, the journey itself is even better than the destination!
A large pergola signals the end of the ‘road’, which lies on a huge valley of flat rock, with no discernable road or parking area. Just pick your spot, and take a hike. We set up our picnic on a lovely spot under a tree, overlooking expanses of water and sandstone, with views of large rock formations in the distance. With full bellies, we took a lazy walk around the valley, before heading for home.
A thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing day!
Enjoy our photos!!
