Broome

Broome is a small-country-town-turned-tourist-haven, sprawling across a never-ending beach, adjoining Cable Beach. The streets are teaming with tourists drinking, swimming, eating and fishing; laughing, chatting, cheering and smiling. This is a place for middle-aged folk to socialise and dress up for dinner; or for European backpackers looking for an escape from the bustle of big cities like Melbourne or Sydney.

For us, Broome is a place to fish. It enjoys wonderful king tides, 9m during our stay, and there is no need for anyone to use a boat ramp - the smooth, firmly compacted shore is perfect to drive your rig straight into the water; just be sure to park your vehicle high on the shore to avoid it being swamped at high tide.

We also enjoyed supping at Som Thai - an unexpectedly flavoursome and authentic Thai restaurant which delighted us with the following menu:

  • Seafood soup (complete with tamarind, lemon juice, tomatoes and fish sauce)

  • Chilli duck (which was meant to be a sliced duck breast but we suspect was half a whole duck!)

  • Fish curry (creamy, nutty, and delightfully fishy, this Barramundi was perfectly cooked)

  • Seafood salad (squid, prawns, mussels, and barramundi, laden with vegetables and fresh herbs, with a zingy crunch)

No boat ramps here - just launch your boat from the sand and park high on the shore.

The gorgeous backpacker, Enke, delighted us with her guitar and flute playing. She loved improvising while Jase strummed Red Hit Chilli Peppers, Audioslave and Pink Floyd.
