Spearguns and Sangria

A sangria afternoon
It’s been one of those days.

Right now we are listening to a completely kick arse song by Boris, Yoshi-yaka-something, an awesome Japanese garage band which James introduced us to. James, I’m sure you know the track. I actually thought it was The Music until i was corrected some time ago (probably by James). We have each had 3 glasses of sangria and the sun is starting to set.

The scouts have returned from boogey boarding to the campsite opposite us – they are trying to figure out how to re-erect their pergola which blew over in the slightest breeze some time this afternoon. Jase and i tried to fix it an hour ago but were not sure how and so stepped away quietly. Equally we were unsure how scouts could erect such a contraption without servicing it to the ground with a heap of ropes and knots and stuff. Isn’t that what scouts do after all??

Practice makes perfect
I have finally learned how to play Bon Jovi’s Dead or Alive and will practice this religiously until December, when we are expected to be reunited with Rebecca and Tony (and gorgeous kids Theabella the Conquerer and Christopher the Cunning) at Port Fairy for the annual tradition of card games, fruit cake and scrabble. And this time, guitar! Rebecca, i hope you are still practising that guitar girl!!

What's for dinner?
The spice box is out of the cupboard and the van smells like a curry. I think Jase is dry-frying spices to make some sort of Italian dish. He has also stuffed chicken fillets with parsley, pine nuts and olive tapenade (which we bought at the EP Fishermen’s market a couple of weeks ago). He has also egg-and-breadcrumbed them but used stuffing mix instead of breadcrumbs and added polenta for fun. Yurmy! Added to Italian spinach with anchovies and tomatoes with onion and garlic, it’s delightful. Charred cob of corn, sliced from the cob and mixed with broad beans and vinegar is going on the side of our plate for extra fun, should be great! (and Jase took a photo but it's sitting in the camera still...)

Let's not forget the NEW caravan!
We picked up the new (and correct) caravan a couple of days ago and it’s BRILLIANT!! It has far more clearance than the old van, so we can be far more free with where to take our journey like over bumpy roads and the odd river crossing, within reason). On the inside there are subtle differences but it’s basically the same van, but we’ll certainly notice the difference when we travel because now dirt roads, corrugations, rocks etc are all open to us.

The most noticeable difference is that now we have TV which actually works; so it’s interesting to be able to watch Oz & James on a Thursday or Iron Chef on a Saturday, or to see Lily (jase’s babalicious nerd) on Letters & Numbers on SBS at 6pm on a weeknight. (and if you haven’t seen that yet, shame on YOU).

It doesn’t have the ‘new van’ smell any more, thanks to our addiction to burning incense. Dadio, we’re using Nag Champra, which I know you have used the past. We haven’t used it for a while at Mitcham (we found a different brand which we preferred) but it’s welcome in the new van. Smells like an ashram... beautiful!

Spearfishing!!
Big news of the day is Jase and i have been paid a salary from YCS Paraplanning (how generous!) and went shopping for more snorkelling gear!!! We bought:
- 2 pairs gloves
- New mask for Eve
- 2 weightbelts and lead weights
- 2 rashies tops
- 2 lycra bottoms
- A catch bag (to put your fish or shell fish or crustaceans into)
- A float line (so you can attach your caught fish and they float to the surface of the water away from you, rather than sink next to you and attract sharks)
- A float (which is bright orange so passing boats can see there is snorkelers below)
- An oyster knife
- A speargun!!! OH YES A SPEAR GUN!!!

So now we are rigged out for all sorts of nonsense. We took the gear out for the first time yesterday and within minutes Jase was yelling some incomprehensible nonsense about big fish and when i looked under the water, I could see he had speared right through the middle of a 50cm monster at the edge of the water. Unfortunately it was a wrasse (aka parrotfish) and inedible, but still very exciting and fun to catch!!!

Oh, and the scouts have worked out their pergola; even though it’s broken they’re now eating dinner under it, so it must be okay...

The new van is monstrous

Say goodbye to the old van and hello to the new!
